Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is current and scheduled for daily automatic updates.
Keep your updates for Windows Operating Systems current- To download updates- click your start menu, click programs, then click Windows Update or you can just go to http://www.update.microsoft.com and retrieve your updates from there.
Stay away from downloading free music and programs such as Lime Wire- unless you want spyware.
Do not visit adult sites- unless you like viruses.
Keep your computer password protected.
Keep your computer dry - this means away from windows.
Backup your files if you don’t want to lose them.
Enable your firewall. If you don’t have one you can download a free one at www.ZoneAlarm.com. Make sure the firewall is automatically enabled whenever the computer is turned on.
Get rid of all temp files on your computer. Assuming you are using a Windows Operating System. First click on the start menu, click search, then click All Files and Folders. Type in *.tmp in the search bar. This will search for all temporary files. Delete all of them- if possible.
Clean up the Internet activity- double-click on your Internet Explorer icon, click on the menu called Tools, choose Internet Options, and click Clear History. Now click on Delete Cookies. Next click on Delete Files. (If you don’t save files offline, you can check the box "Delete all offline content".)
